About Annie Sloan
The Story Behind Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®
Annie Sloan is one of the world's most respected authorities on colour, paint and decorative techniques, with a career spanning over four decades.
A trained fine artist and colour expert, Annie Sloan developed Chalk Paint® in 1990 after recognising that there was a need for a paint that would make furniture transformation easier, more creative and accessible to everyone.
At the time, traditional furniture painting often involved lengthy preparation, sanding, priming and specialist knowledge. Annie wanted to create a paint that would allow people to transform furniture with confidence, encouraging creativity rather than making decorating feel complicated.
The result was Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® — a versatile decorative paint designed to help people refresh, reinvent and personalise their homes.
WHO IS ANNIE SLOAN?
Annie trained as a fine artist for seven years and turned to decorative work after graduating university in the mid-1970s.
Annie’s remit included anything from sympathetic, deliberately undetectable restoration work to painting head-turning murals in houses as commissions; often using her own home-made paint. By 1987, Annie had written the phenomenally successful book The Complete Book of Decorative Paint Techniques, which is considered to be the industry bible on the subject.
In 1990, frustrated and unable to find paints equal to her requirements, Annie partnered with a Belgian factory to produce and sell the paint she had been home-making on a large scale. It was revolutionary. Chalk Paint™ became a global phenomenon and still is to this day. In 2000, Annie set up a shop in Oxford to showcase Chalk Paint™, host workshops, and offer interior design services. In October 2021, Annie Sloan Interiors introduced their premium range of 32 Wall Paint colours.
Annie lives and works in Oxford with her husband David who runs the business with her. Born in Australia, Annie came to England to a farming life in Kent when she was ten years old. With spells in Southern Africa and connections to France, Cuba and the US, Annie describes herself as a “citizen of the world.” Annie has three sons and has lived in Oxford for the last few decades
IS ANNIE SLOAN PAINT ECO-FRIENDLY?
The range of paints – Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan, Annie Sloan Wall Paint and Satin Paint – are all water based and contain minimal levels of VOC. The British Coatings Federation (BCF) consider this the environmentally-friendly choice for paint.
Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan and Annie Sloan Satin Paint have an A+ (i.e. highest possible) EU indoor air rating. Annie Sloan Wall Paint has an A EU indoor air rating. This means they don't affect the air quality inside your home.
IS ANNIE SLOAN PAINT VEGAN?
Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan, Annie Sloan Wall Paint, and Annie Sloan Satin Paint do not contain any animal-derived products. Please note that Chalk Paint™ Wax contains beeswax; some of our Chalk Paint™ and Wall Paint brushes also contain animal-derived products. None of our Annie Sloan products are tested on animals.
HOW DO YOU CARE FOR ANNIE SLOAN PAINTED FURNITURE
Wiping lightly with a damp/dry microfibre cloth should be sufficient to clean.
Stubborn marks on waxed pieces can often be removed with a little Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax on a cloth, which acts as an eraser. If you choose to use cleaner you will eventually wear away the wax, but if you would prefer to use a mild surface cleaner apply using a cloth and test in an inconspicuous area first. Regular use of cleaning products may require re-waxing over time.
Always use heat mats and coasters to protect your painted and waxed surfaces. Keep away from extreme temperatures or humidity. Like you, your finish prefers a moderate climate!
Waxes dissolve in alcohol, so using it on bars is not advisable.
Avoid aerosol spray polishes as they may contain solvents or silicone that could dissolve the wax.
