Step 1: Choose your furniture

Here's where one of the biggest myths about chalk paint comes in.
Do you need to sand furniture before using Chalk Paint®?
Usually, no.
One of the reasons Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® is so popular is that it generally doesn't require sanding or priming before painting.
However, “no prep” doesn't mean “never prepare”.
Take a moment to look at your furniture.
Is it dirty or greasy?
Give it a clean first.
This is particularly important for kitchen furniture where grease can affect the finish. Annie Sloan recommends avoiding harsh chemicals and using warm water or appropriate gentle cleaning where necessary.
Is the surface highly polished?
A very lightly sanded surface can help create a key for the paint.
Is it laminate or melamine?
A light hand sanding may be recommended to create a suitable surface for the paint to adhere to.
Is it old, stained or oily wood?
Some older furniture, particularly certain pieces from the 1930s and 1940s, can contain finishes or stains that bleed through paint.
New untreated pine can also release tannins that may cause staining.
In these situations, additional preparation or a suitable sealer may be required.

Step 4: Remove handles and hardware
If possible, remove handles, knobs and other hardware before painting.
This gives you a cleaner finish and makes painting around edges much easier.
It's also a great opportunity to consider whether changing the handles could give your furniture another transformation.
Sometimes a new colour plus new hardware is all it takes to make an old piece look completely different.
Step 5: Stir your Chalk Paint®
Before you start painting, give your Chalk Paint® a good stir.
If the paint seems particularly thick, a little water can be added and mixed in.
Don't overcomplicate it.
The beauty of Chalk Paint® is its versatility – you can use it thickly to create texture or thin it slightly for a softer finish or wash.
Step 6: Start painting
Now comes the fun part.
Dip your brush into the paint and start applying it directly to your furniture.
Don't worry about making every brush stroke identical.
For a traditional Chalk Paint® look, you can work your brush in different directions and allow some texture and movement to remain visible.
You can apply the paint more thickly for a rustic, textured effect, or thin it slightly and use a different brush technique for a smoother finish.
Don't aim for perfection on your first coat.
You're creating a painted finish, not trying to make the furniture look as though it came out of a factory.
Step 7: Apply a second coat if needed
Allow your first coat to dry before deciding whether another coat is required.
Annie Sloan advises that drying time can vary with conditions, but the first coat can be touch dry in around 1–3 hours.
Some colours and surfaces will require more coverage than others.
Don't worry if the first coat looks uneven.
That's completely normal.
Once it's dry, apply another coat where necessary.
Step 8: Choose your finish
This is where you can really start to define the character of your furniture.
For a classic painted finish
Use Clear Chalk Paint® Wax to protect indoor furniture and enhance the depth of colour.
Wax is applied over the dry paint and then any excess is removed with a lint-free cloth.
For a smooth modern finish
You can lightly sand the painted surface to smooth out texture before applying your wax.
A Flat Brush and slightly diluted paint can also help you achieve a smoother appearance.
For a distressed finish
Once the paint is dry, selectively sand areas where natural wear might occur – such as corners, edges and around handles.
This allows the underlying surface or previous paint colour to show through.
The key is selective distressing.
You don't need to sand every surface.
Step 9: Protect your painted furniture
Painting is only part of the process.
Your finished piece needs an appropriate protective finish.
For indoor furniture, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® Wax is a popular choice. It adds protection, gives the paint a beautiful finish and can enhance the depth of colour.
Apply the wax in sections, working it into the painted surface.
Then remove any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Don't leave thick pools of wax sitting on the surface.
How long does Chalk Paint® Wax take to cure?
This is an important distinction:
Dry doesn't mean fully cured.
Your furniture can be used once the wax is touch dry, but the wax continues to harden over time. Annie Sloan states that curing can take approximately 5–21 days, depending on conditions.
During this time, treat your newly painted furniture with a little extra care.
How to get a smooth finish with Chalk Paint®
Not everyone wants a rustic or distressed piece.
Chalk Paint® can also be used to create a beautifully smooth, contemporary finish.
Try these techniques:

Lightly sand the surface if necessary to remove prominent texture.
